Training with the Butterflies. We have had one very exciting week training at the Butterfly Children Hospice in Changsha, China! Please check out the amazing work they do (http://butterflych.org)
The team at Butterfly has supported the work that we do in Vietnam for the past year, and it was wonderful to finally meet the amazing staff who work there and their beautiful butterfly children.
Little Feather Foundation was able to take two of the local Vietnamese nurses that we work alongside, with us to China for a full week of intensive Palliative Care training.
We were able to observe the high quality care that the Butterfly Children’s Hospice provides and how they manage to keep their children comfortable and give them dignity, whether that be at the end of their lives or through medically challenging times.
Our team really enjoyed watching the wonderful Ayi’s care so lovingly for the children. The Butterfly nurses showed us assessment skills, and how best to manage pain and other difficult symptoms that children with life limiting conditions face.
But most importantly, we were encouraged. We were encouraged to never give up on hope and joy. Often we see children who face incredibly challenging situations and have such fragile lives. But, we will keep hoping for these children – hoping not only for a better future but a better present. Our hope will drive us to action to do everything we can to make each moment count for the precious children that we are priveledged to know. Sometimes children pull through these difficult times, other times they don’t. But we will stand by them through whatever they are going through, and hope to bring comfort, dignity and joy to them.
While there are some big differences in setting, we are all working towards the same purpose of providing palliative care for children who are facing uncertain futures and are experiencing huge challenges.
We would like to give a HUGE THANK YOU to Butterfly Children’s Hospice – especially to Katie and Lyn who gave us their time, knowledge and expertise, and to the rest of the butterfly team who always made sure we knew which bus to catch, showed us the best places to visit in Changsha and that we always had delicious food to eat!
Another BIG thank you to the very generous contributions from Kids Without Boarders, who funded everybody’s flights, and to the other individuals who donated to make this trip possible!
We leave China feeling so grateful, and incredibly inspired.
