Our care for Loc has always been about following his lead. That means that while he wanted to continue to fight and live, we would fight with him and give him as much life as possible. But that also meant that when Loc was ready to say goodbye, we would be by his side and tell him that is was okay for him to go.
Our sweet, little Loc passed away yesterday morning. Often people pass away in the wee hours of the morning, but Loc waited for us so that we could be with him for those last precious moments. He waited so that we could be there to hold his hand and be by his side. As he drifted away we whispered in his ear that it was okay for him to go if he was ready. We told him that we loved him, and that we would miss him dearly. And peacefully, he left us.
Loc lost his first family, but we were privileged to be his second one. Loc is not our patient. Loc is our family, our child. We were honored to share Loc with his extended family, the wonderful nannies and nurses, who also loved him dearly.
We loved Loc more than we probably should have, but we did it anyway. We loved Loc’s chubby cheeks and perfect little lips. We loved his toothy smile and his happy, peeping tongue. We loved his tiny hands that reached out, explored and connected him to his world. We loved feeling his little legs resting in our laps. We loved laying beside him, holding his as close as we could, feeling him touch our face and our hair, listening to him chat as if he was having a complete conversation.
Loc is known and loved by many throughout the world. Many people have journeyed with him and followed his story. Thank you to all those who helped to make Loc’s life as special as it was. Thank you for all your thoughts and your prayers.
Tomorrow will be the start of a New Year. Loc is the tiny boy who first inspired us to do the work we do. As we come into the new year, Loc’s life will keep inspiring us so we can continue caring for many other children who also deserve to be loved and known - just as Loc was.
We all have such heavy hearts as we have had to say goodbye. We wish Loc was here with us now. Loc was the bravest wee boy we have ever met. We will miss seeing his beautiful face everyday, but he will be with us forever. This really is the hardest farewell, but we know that finally, Loc is free.
Rest in Peace, Little Buddy.
