We have some wonderful news to share!
Ly, who arrived a few months ago has been given the go ahead for surgery!
It has been decided that Ly is a candidate for the shunt, which will drain the fluid accumulating in her brain and significantly improve her quality of life! She is booked into the hospital this week for the operation.
Many of the children who we care for are not considered for surgery. There is risk involved, a higher prevalence of complications post op and limited follow up care.
Ho Chi Minh City alone has a population of around 8.2 million people and only a handful of Paediatric Neurosurgeons. There are so many children who require medical aid. Surgeon’s often do back to back surgery and work very long hours. They are strained for time and resources, so at times have to make difficult decisions about which children will have the most benefit from surgery, and sometimes, this means children who are more likely to have a shortened life expectancy, with or without a shunt, will miss out.
Ly’s head is quite big and heavy. We will all have to work hard to help her body build up the strength to support her head. While we know it will be a challenging road ahead for her, we are THRILLED that she has this opportunity and that we get to be a part of it!
Not only is this incredible news for Ly, but hopefully this will start to open the door for more children, like Ly, to receive surgery.
We need your help get Ly the surgery she needs to treat her hydrocephalus, which will result in a much more comfortable, brighter, and possibility filled future for this special, wee girl!
We have fallen in love with Ly and her beautiful little smile and we want to do everything we can to give her the best chance possible!
Please donate, if you are in a position to do so, or share this link so that Ly can get this surgery! Every bit counts - no matter how small!
