We have been loving seeing this beautiful girl blossom this year! This is Tra My, she is 6 years old. Tra My is not able to communicate verbally with us her thoughts and wishes, but that doesn’t mean she can’t communicate!
This year she has really found her voice. Tra My lets us know if she is comfortable or not sitting up in her chair or bed, she will choose what book she would like to read, she will let us know when she is ready for us to turn the page, and she will remind us to put her musical mobile on when she returns to her bed!
One of her favourite parts of the day is story time where she will be read books, and she takes time to enjoy the pictures on each page. We have only had English books, but today, we received some Vietnamese books so she will be able to be read to in Vietnamese by her careers also.
Sometimes we imagine putting ourselves in Tra My’s shoes. We imagine not being able to verbally communicate our thoughts or our feelings to others. And how hard this must be at times. This feeling motivates us to take as much time as need be, to get to know the children who cannot speak or communicate clearly with us. We are priveledged to be able to take the time with these children and get to know them. Get to know what they like, what they don’t like, and most of all listen to them. As we listen to them we show them that they are loved, valued and respected.
We love Tra My’s big smile and her contagious laugh. We love making moments count in each day for Tra My.
