This smiley, wee girl is Anh. She is 4 years old and she has hydrocephalus, which has been treated with a shunt.
Recently, she has been having a really hard time battling with bacterial meningitis, her shunt has been infected and has needed to be removed. She has spent 6 long weeks recovering in hospital with IV antibiotics and under continuous monitoring and testing . Her nannies have been constantly at her side, ensuring she receives the love and care that she needs in this difficult time.
At the onset of her illness, everyone was so concerned about Anh, as bacterial meningitis is a life threatening illness. We were all very worried that she might not make it through. Anh has shown us, how brave she can be and that she is such a fighter! We are all very proud of her and happy to see her recover. She has had a recent lumbar puncture which has confirmed the infection has cleared!
Anh will be needing a new shunt inserted to continue to treat her hydrocephalus. We are waiting to find out when this will happen.
Little Feather Foundation has been covering the costs so far for Anh’s medical care including medicine, nutrition and her stay in the hospital.
Anh is a very loved child by her nannies, we are looking forward to when she can return to her loving home.
We will update you all on Anh’s progress!
Sometimes you meet children and you realise, just by looking at that them, how hard life is for them, and the daily struggle that they have to endure. As you know, we have been getting to know Nha. For Nha, everyday is a battle. He struggles with constant breathing issues, pain, and severe muscle contractions of his fragile little body. Nha also has hydrocephalus which causes headaches and nausea.
We knew straight away that Nha would benefit from Palliative care. Palliative care is a holistic model of care, this involves taking into consideration not only physical and medical care but also thinking about the child’s emotional, social and spiritual health.
We have been loving spending time with Nha and getting to know him better.
Today he enjoyed sitting upright in a new bean bag, able to see the world from a different point of view, rather than just from his bedside. He has been enjoying some nice time in the sun (although only for short periods as it is very hot here in Vietnam, even for all of us!). Daily massages not only make his skin feel nice and soft, but also helps him relax his muscles. Nha has quite good hearing - he responds to his name, enjoys listening to our voices when we read him stories and sing songs and his face lights up when listening to all kinds of different music. Nha also has some vision - he smiles at the bright, colourful lights in the sensory room, and watches the pictures in his books we read.
While we have been getting to know Nha, and understand more about him and his needs, we have been starting to form a treatment plan, which is tailored specifically to him, in the hope of significantly improving his quality of life.
We will keep you posted on Nha's story.
Chúc Mừng Năm Mới
Vietnam is filled with celebrations at the moment - bright yellow and pink flowers adorn the streets and houses, amazing meals are being prepared and shared, and lucky money is being handed out with great generosity.
Tết is a time to celebrate the end of this Lunar Year, and the beginning of the New Lunar Year.
One of the ways Tết is celebrated is by wearing colorful, new clothes. This handsome young man is Nha, wearing a lovely new outfit, which we bought especially for him.
Nha, like many of our other Little Feathers, has untreated hydrocephalus. He also has a long list of other medical complications due to this condition.
He is a beautiful, smily friend who we are getting to know, and would like for all of you to get to know too.
Over the next little while, we will be working out what we can do to best help Nha have the most comfortable and happy life possible.
We wish you all peace and prosperity in the Lunar New Year and look forward to sharing Nha's journey with you.
